EL
JARDIN ALEMAN |
Location:
|
The
lodge is surrounded by 100 hectares primary and secondary rainforest on
the banks of the Napo River.
The resort istself is built on 5 hectares, located on the banks of Misahuallí River, a tributary
of Napo River , which forms after about 1400 km, in Perú, the
Amazon. |
Description:
|
These rivers (Misahulli & Napo) are so called White
Waters. That means that they or their tributaries rise in the Andes
Mountains and they always carry sediments along. This is also why they
are relatively entrophic and they look muddy and dirty because of the
stirred up sediments. The opposite is Black Water. These rivers or
lakes rise in the Amazon Basin by ground or rainwater; because of
weathering of plants, they are very acid and dark, but clear and
oligotrophic water.

LIANA
LODGE |
Location:
|
Located
near the community of Puerto Barantilla (south of Puerto Napo - in the
Tena region). With their canoe they await your arrival on the
river shore at Puerto Barantilla at an agreed time, usually in the
early afternoon. From there you are taken two kilometers downstream in
wide and safe motor canoes until we reach our lodge. After your welcome
drink they will show you to your cabin. In the evening, at our inviting
open fire, they can arrange your tours during your stay with us. |
Description:
|
The
Lodge has a maximum of 35 guests in 12 double rooms, 1 quadruple, 1
triple room and one family cabin. Overall they have 8
semi-attached double cabins for guests, one central building with
reception area, restaurant and bar, as well as 2 smaller staff
buildings. In the rainforest there is no electricity. For this
reason you can enjoy tranquil evenings with candle light and the sounds
of the forest.
All of our cabins are made out of local materials. You will be
surprised how comfortable they are. They are built on stilts and are
mainly made out of bamboo with traditional palm thatched roofs,
creating a lovely flair. From your cabin you have a lovely
view of the river and all cabins have their own spacious terrace, from
which you can watch the sun go down while resting in your hammock.
The bathroom is tiled, with warm shower, toilette and wash basin. Every
room has an ensuite bathroom. The water arrives from a cristal clear
spring behind the lodge. To allow better air circulation in the
rooms we have replaced windows with mosquito meshes. This and the palm
thatched roofs create a cooler room temperature and you might even need
a woollen blanket at night.

Activities
|
- AmaZOOnico
- Visit of the rescue center for animals which is situated at 30 minute
walk from Liana Lodge. (it's possible to go by canoe as well). The team
of volunteers will show you the selva's animals : monkeys, parrots,
ocelots... Most of the animals live free, however, some of them are
kept in cages for their own security. After the tour, you will have the
opportunity to go to the bar and the small shop which presents the
kichwa's artisanal work.
- Mirador
- You will discover the jungle in walking to the Mirador, where you
have a wonderfull view over the Island Anaconda and the village of
Ahuano.
- Rio
Rodriguez - Discovering the protected area of Selva Viva, you
arrive at the Rio Rodriguez where you can relax by enjoying your meal
served in leaves of platanillos and taking a bath. All over the day,
the kichwa guide shares his knowledge about the flora and fauna with
you. He explains to you which plants are used by the kichwas for
medicine and which one for roof construction, blowguns and so on.
Concerning the fauna, you will have the opportunity to observe an
interesting variety of insects (butterfly, ants, termite) and maybe
amphibias. However, the chances that you see bigger mamals are small
because usually they are night-active or very discreet.
- Balsa
Raft - By canoe, you go up the Rio Arajuno until the Rio Cosano.
On a small beach, you build a kichwa traditional raft on which you can
float down the Rio to Liana Lodge. It is as well possible to swim
beside the raft.

flora of the Selva. On the way you will meet the Ceibo, one of the
biggest tree in Amazonia, with its impressive buttress roots.

there, the guide will show you how they pan for gold ... and you will
have the opportunity to try for yourself. With a bit a luck, you will
find gold!

|
Description:
|
At the Hamadryade
Lodge, we did not wish to
work toward any "Eco" accreditation, hoping to gain any commercial
benefit from it; we wanted to do things according a personal ethic
based on the
simplest belief : respect is everything. Therefore, what we wanted to
do was
not the essential part, but what we did not want to do was our main
preoccupation.
We bought this little piece of
Amazonian Forest
to protect and respect it. We love it even more because of its
imperfections,
stigmata of a past exploitation... a gold rush took its toll on some
small
areas, leaving deep scars on the ground. We knowingly chose to build
the lodge
on this very same place, somehow to embellish this invisible wound and
help it
heal.
This forest is a living organism
that requires
attention, so we help it, selecting the tree species that will help
building a
stronger and more stable ecosystem.
Take up a challenge
is worth something only if
its consequences are positives; this is what we are
trying to do, helping the
forest to grow healthier and embellish, our small brick
to the gigantic wall
that is the protection of the Amazon Forest.
Not only we protect our forest,
but we also do
everything not to harm the rest of the jungle around.
Hence the necessity for
us to use rainwater for the needs of the Lodge and
cleaning it afterwards,
avoiding the use of the water from rivers or worse, underground water.
Used waters from the kitchen and showers are filtered
before reaching the soils;
moreover, we are using biodegradable amenities products ensuring a
lesser
pollution. As for the toilets' used waters, they are going through a
sceptic
bio-tank system, as well as depolluting plants, using a natural process
to
progressively reduce the levels of pollution. This way we can avoid
harmful
pollutions to the rivers and underground waters. Even our swimming pool
functions on a chlorine-free treatment, using Ozone to treat the water
against
germs and algae’s.
Finally, all this is only a narrow
vision of
what really is the protection of the environement, making us an
Eco-Lodge. In
fact, an ecosystem, is not only the habitat, but also everything that
inhabits
it; including Human communities as they harmoniously live within the
forest.
These communities not only rationally exploit the products of the
forest as
Cocoa, fruits, the plants that they use for construction, or craft,
they
especially use a large range of plants for a rich pharmacopoeia.
This pharmacopoeia is a key
element in these
populations' cultural life, allowing them to heal bodies' as well as
spiritual
wounds. Therefore it exists an indefectible bound between humans and
there
environment, obviously at a basic survival level, but also through
their
cultural and spiritual life. It is this bound that should be protected
and sometimes
revitalized so it does not suffer from the damages done to the forest
and
acculturation processes. It is also obvious that this very bound is the
key to
protect the Amazonian ecosystem; therefore, the philosophy we wish to
develop
has to be Eco as much as Ethno-Friendly oriented, both being
inextricably
connected, in order to act towards a real protection of the environment.
It is from humans' activities that
comes the
threats to the environment, and the solution could only
be found amongst people
whose lives reflect a deep respect of the Nature that surrounds them.
From this philosophy, we were able
to define a
set of architectural and decoration concepts. For the buildings, we
wanted an
harmonious ensemble, well integrated in its environment without having
to copy
the traditional styles. Those are constructions purely elaborated
around a
family core, according to a specific environment, all of which is
hardly
suitable for a touristic use. The Toquilla (Cardulovica palmata) roofs
for
instance require a regular use of powerful pesticides mixed with diesel
to
ensure the durability of the roof. In the communities, those pesticides
are
useless because families make fire under the roof on a daily basis, the
smoke
being an efficient agent to protect the leaves.
Therefore, we went for a new kind
of design for
the region, preferring the vision of French architects (Olivier Donnet
and
Caroline Tresse). We chose pure and simple lines, contrasting with the
exuberant Nature around. Space being integrated in luxuriance, an opening
under
the canopea, lines amongst a chaos of curves. This choice of space is
going
towards an integration of light in the buildings, allowing to regulate
atmospheric humidity through a natural aeration.
As for water and electricity,
nothing was done
that could damage the site, we have everything buried, avoiding cutting
trees.
Through the decoration, our
Ethno-friendly
philosophy prevails again in every corner of the Lodge and the
Bungalows,
allowing an harmonious alliance between modern and traditional. Each
Bungalow
is a tribute to the Nature as well as to some of the ethnic groups
cultural
aesthetism and symbolism. The colours we chose for the bungalows are
directly
inspired by the Amazonian Environment : the red soil, the wings of a
common
butterfly, tree leaves, a wild flower. Each ceiling displays the main
animal
and vegetal symbols from four important ethnic groups : Quichua, Shuar,
Huoarani, and Cofane. Theses symbols and representations give to each
bungalow
a proper identity with an ethnic and even mystic dimension.

Depart from Quito in the morning
(11:00), flight to Francisco de Orellana (Coca), arriving to Coca at
around 12:00. Transfer to the Napo River port then the motorized canoe
ride downstream will be approximately one hour and 30 minutes. Once
aboard the Manatee Amazon Explorer will start navigating downstream.
The courteous crew will attend to your needs and the guides will
introduce you to the surprising Amazon world, its people, more than 600
species of birds, and hundreds of botanical wonders. The Manatee sails
along different ecosystems and important natural reserves such as the
Yasuní National Park and the Limoncocha Biological Reserve.
SATURDAY
Parrots and the Limoncocha Biological Reserve Early departure by motor
canoe to visit a very special corner of the jungle, the clay banks of
the river where different species of parrots gather daily to eat this
clay that helps them digest the seeds they feed on, it is quite a
sight, colorful and noisy! Then, back aboard the Manatee to sail
upriver and reach one of the tributaries of the Napo to observe the
flora and fauna, the surprising pygmy monkeys and then a trek to the
facilities of what used to be South America's Summer Institute of
Linguistics in Limoncocha, currently the only Biological Reserve of
Ecuador. Upon reaching the Limoncocha Lake, we will board a canoe and
travel along the banks of this marshy ecosystem, where over 470 species
of birds have been recorded. There is a possibility to fish for
piranha, and for a short walk. At night, it is possible to observe the
black caimans that inhabit the lagoon; quite an experience... Late
return to the Manatee for dinner and overnight.
SUNDAY
Culture / The Amazonian man / Giants of the Forest The adventure today
begins with a visit to the Museum of Pompeya, a small archaeological
sample with Amazonian funeral urns that date back several centuries, as
well as utensils and ways of life of the ancient denizens of the rain
forest, which can still be seen today. We will also have the
opportunity to see the giant trees of the Amazon, like the kapok, which
rises over the forest canopy to more than 80 meters high, with huge,
protrading roots. Guests can also try rowing the canoes on a tranquil
tributary of the Napo River up to the house of a native family, to
share a moment with them and learn their ways of life.

knowledge of the great Amazon region. Then transfer to the airport for

SANI
LODGE
|
Location:
|
Coca |
Description:
|
Sani
Lodge is truly a one of a
kind Ecuador eco-lodge dedicated to ecotourism, environmental
conservation, and community in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador. Sani
Lodge is owned and operated by members of the Sani community, meaning
that with their extensive knowledge of the Amazon wildlife and
biodiversity they can give Sani Lodge guests the true experience of the
Ecuadorian Amazon jungle. In addition to providing excellent service to
its guests, Sani Lodge participates in community ecotourism - profits
from the jungle lodge are reinvested into the community, improving the
lives of all who live there.
|
|
Sani
Lodge accommodates a maximum of 40 guests (at the cabins), emphasizing
quality rather than quantity, and thereby offering you a more intimate
experience with the rainforest. The lodge itself consists of ten,
private, thatch-roofed cabanas, each with a modern bathroom. The
cabanas are spaciously designed for double or triple occupancy, and
have screened in windows to guard against insects while you sleep.
Electric lights at the lodge run from ecologically friendly solar
energy instead of a noisy generator, so the night sounds will be pure.
Natural-oil lamps are als0 provided for those who appreciate that
rustic feel.
Birdwatching
Tree Tower
A short, ten minute
walk through the forest will bring you to our 30m (100ft) tree tower,
built around a giant, emergent Kapok tree. Looking out across the
rainforest canopy at this level, gives you a unique perspective,
opening up a whole new world of Amazon biodiversity that is often
difficult, if not impossible to see. White-throated Toucan, and
Bare-necked Fruitcrow, to name just a few, and if you have a little
luck, you might even see Red Howler Monkeys asleep in the treetops.
Parrot
clay lick (Yasuni National Park)
See parrots and
parakeets from special viewing blinds within camera range! They come
here mostly all mornings to eat the clay that aids in digestion of some
of the unripe seeds and fruits they eat. The nearest blind is just at
50-meter from the river. Here you will see Mealy Amazon,
Yellow-crowned, Orange-winged and Blue-headed Parrots, as well as
Dusky-headed and, occasionally, Cobalt-winged Parakeets. A second
blind, reached by a 20-minute trail-hike through the forest, is
typically visited by Cobalt-winged Parakeets, with Orange-cheeked
Parrots.
Chorongo
Trail (and others...)
After a relaxing
canoe ride to the end of the lake you will arrive at Chorongo Trail,
whose Kichwa name means “Woolly Monkey”. This is our longest hike,
leading you across muddy swamps on log bridges, through the
dense-jungle of natural tree-fall gaps, and the under story shade of
pristine, primary rainfores. Along the way you will learn about
medicinal plants, taste native, edible fruits and insects and discover
how to weave traditional palm-fiber bags. As for wildlife, if you walk
quietly and are alert, it may be possible to see Giant Anteaters (with
great luck), Black-Mantled Tamarin Monkeys, poison-dart frogs, and
countless other surprises that the forest may hold in store for you.
More trails are
available ranging from easy to difficult.
Fishing
If this activity is
your hobby there are various places where you can practice it while you
are at Sani lodge. These are: Pañacocha lagoon, Challuacocha
lagoon, Napo river islands, and the small streams that take you to our
diverse trails.
Canoe
the Challuayacu
Yacu is kichwa for
stream, and from the Challua you will experience the rainforest in a
whole new way. Sneak up on birds, amphibians, and other Amazon wildlife
from a steady canoe paddled by an expert native guide and notice the
difference in rainforest vegetation which grows along and overtop of
the river. Caiman Watching - Whether from the bar with a pair of
binoculars, or up close and personal in a canoe, you will be able to
view the active and healthy Black Caiman population (a rare and
endangered Amazon species) which resides in our lagoon.
Night
Caiman Watching
Our black-water oxbow
lake is one of the increasingly rare havens for the endangered Black
Caiman, supporting a healthy population of these large, up to 5-meter
long, crocodilians. After the sun sets, these non-aggressive and shy
reptiles become active along the water’s edge, hunting fish, mammals,
birds, even anacondas, and sometimes can be seen swimming lazily across
the lake. Take a dugout canoe out onto the water at night, with the
moon casting an eerie glow into the humid fog, the frogs and nightjars
singing, and you will see the glowing red eyes of baby, juvenile, and
adult caimans.
Night
Hiking
Many animals stay
hidden away for most of the day, depending on their cryptic colouration
and camouflage to avoid detection, sleeping motionless in the canopy,
or under rocks, logs and leaf-litter on the forest floor. But at night
the forest comes alive with a myriad of insects beyond your wildest
imagination, tree frogs ranging from the size of your fingernail to the
size of your whole hand, and mammals such as Night Monkeys, various bat
species, and Kinkajous. A hike through the Rainforest at night is an
opportunity to discover the mysteries of what happens in the dark,
hidden behind the shadows, in the deep recesses of the forest, where
few dare to venture.
Bar
Observation
Because the
Challuacocha is such a superb place to observe birds and aquatic
wildlife, it is possible to see Magpie Tanagers, Cocoi Herons, Amazon
Umbrella birds, freshwater turtles, and maybe even an Anaconda or Black
Caiman while enjoying a cocktail and relaxing in our lakeside bar.
Native
home

TAPIR
LODGE |
Location:
|
The
Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve lies in the northeastern corner of Ecuador’s
Amazon rainforest. It is a biodiversity hotspot, home to one of the
world’s greatest concentrations of distinct animal and plant
species. A complex system of alluvial formations, 13 lagoons,
rivers and flooded forest make up the 603,000 ha site, recording some
of the highest levels of Biodiversity in the World.
One highlight of any once-in-a-lifetime visit to Ecuador's stunning
rainforest region are the flooded forests of Igapo at the heart of the
Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. The Cuyabeno Reserve has more than 520
different species of birds; 60 species of orchids; over 350 species of
fish; a big variety of reptiles such as anacondas, caimans and river
turtles. As well as the 12,000 estimated species of plant found within
the reserve, many species of mammals including the incredible tapir
(Tapirus terrestris), which lends its name to our exclusive Lodge.
The Reserve is also home to a number of rare species including the
mythical pink river dolphin, the Hoatzin or the harpy-eagle with its
eight-foot wing-span. Because the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve
belongs to the National Protected Areas System, only very few Tour
Operators are qualified to work in this zone. This is reason enough not
to find a lot of tourists visiting this area, so we are able to enjoy
nature and its great sounds. |
Description:
|
Tapir
Lodge is a complex of a bungalow, built following the Quichua
construction guidelines, a marvelous 15 m tower and a social area
including a restaurant serving delicious food, and a bar. All this was
constructed next to the Cuyabeno River.
The first tower has four double rooms and the second 8 double rooms.
Each room is comfortable equipped, with private bathroom, hot water,
each with its own balcony and hammocks. The bungalow with 4 double
rooms and 2 quadruple rooms is comfortable and spacious.
All rooms have private bathrooms, hot water and a mosquito net over
every bed.
Experience the jungle from our 15 m towers and enjoy the rainforest
directly from your own room. Wake up in the morning with a monkey troop
crossing the nearby Kapok Trees or relax in your hammock while having
great views of the beautiful Cuyabeno River. |
Activities
|
- Birdwatching - Cuyabeno is a
privileged place for
birding. Boasting a birdlist of more than 520 species of birds,
Cuyabeno is a delight for seasoned as well as beginner birdwatchers.
- Canoeing
- Located in the heart of a lagoon complex and flooded forest, Tapir
Lodge employs local dugout canoes as the only transportation around the
area.
- Caiman
watching - When the night comes, we will jump in our canoes and
with our flashlights we will search for Caimans. Four species of
caimans inhabit the reserve, the biggest being the black caiman
(Melanosuchus niger) measuring up to 5 meters long, but this type of
caiman is a rather shy and rarely seen. The most common is the
spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) measuring up to 3 meters.
- Piranha
fishing (catch and release) - Fishing has become one of the
favorite activities among our guests. Even if you can't catch anything,
fishing in the afternoon is a great time to relax while looking at the
most beautiful sunsets you will ever see and listening to the exotic
sounds of the rainforest.
- Jungle
treks - In our jungle hikes we walk under the canopy and
experience the primary forest from within. Our excursions will
take you through pristine Terra Firme and "cananguchal" (temporarily
flooded forest) ecosystems. Our guides will help you to understand the
complexity of the forest and its relations. Walking through very dense
vegetation, we will listen to the wonderful voices of the rainforest,
we might even bump into the shy Tapir ( Tapirus terrestris ).
- Indian
communities - Tapir Lodge works together with the Siona
community of Puerto Bolivar. The Siona have lived in harmony with the
jungle for centuries and nowadays they have chosen the eco-tourism
activities in order to improve their live standards and protect the
environment.
- Shamanism
- Learn more about these millenary communities with their Shamans. Walk
through the forest in company of a Shaman apprentice and learn the
medicinal uses of plants. Be part of a traditional healing ceremony or
simply talk with these knowledgeable and friendly men.

SACHA
LODGE |
Location:
|
Sacha
Lodge is located 50 miles downstream from the port town of Coca and twenty minutes from the
banks of the majestic Napo River. |
Description:
|
The
lodging at Sacha was carefully designed to offer comfort to the
traveler yet preserve the environment and rainforest ambience. All of
our cabins, with high thatched roofs and private shaded terraces, are
constructed with traditional materials and nestle well concealed into
the lush surroundings. Each of 26 the rooms, which include single,
double and (upon request) triple accommodations, provides a private
bathroom with flushing toilet and hot shower. All cabins are screened
against insects, and contain ceiling fans above two comfortable double
beds. During free time, visitors may overlook the jungle from hammocks
and often report seeing wild fauna such as toucans, agoutis and monkeys
right from their own cabin!
Guests may also enjoy a raised lookout above our main bar and lounge,
which offers a scenic view of Pilchicocha Lake and excellent
opportunities to birdwatch. |
Activities
|
The Canopy Walk
A new and much anticipated addition to Sacha's activities is our
940-foot (275-meter) long canopy walkway. At approximately 94 feet (30
meters) above the ground, imagine exploring the rainforest up in the
treetops!
The
Kapok
Tower
One of Sacha Lodge's original attractions and an all-time favorite of
our guests is the famous 135-foot (43-meter) kapok observation tower.
Situated on a hill and constructed around a giant kapok tree for
stability, this tower allows guests another opportunity to climb into
and above the rainforest canopy for a magnificent view of the
surrounding area.
The
Butterfly
House
Sacha Lodge is home to one of the largest butterfly farms in Ecuador.
Designed as a live exhibition conservatory, the Butterfly House is now
successfully breeding nearly 40 local butterfly species! Guests will be
shown how these beautiful insects are bred and raised, and later be
free to wander through “the flying room”, where hundreds of colorful
butterflies flutter from flower to flower. Transparent glass-wing
butterflies, spectacular blue morphs, striking tiger longwings, bright
yellow swallowtails and giant nocturnal owl butterflies are only a few
of the species you'll encounter here, up close and personal.
The
Yasuní Parrot Lick
At a short distance from Sacha Lodge is Ecuador's most accessible
parrot lick, an exposed clay riverbank where brightly colored parrots
of several different species gather in the early morning.
Wildlife
Anyone who has ever planned to visit the rainforest has at least once
asked: “What animals will I see there?” There is an incredibly high
diversity of species found around Sacha Lodge, and we are sure that you
will have the opportunity to see many fascinating creatures here.
However, the wild is unpredictable and no two visits are ever the same!
Monkeys are seen quite frequently, but how many of the 8 species found
here will cross your path? They range in size from the tiny half pound
pygmy marmoset to the noisy 17 pound red howler monkey, and night
monkeys can be found in groups as small as 2 while squirrel monkeys can
travel in groups of more than 150. And besides monkeys, there may be as
many as 60 other species of mammals within our reserve (not including
up to 50 species of bats)! So keep your eyes open, and maybe you'll
spot an anteater, a 3-toed sloth, or even an ocelot as you explore
their natural habitat. |

To
get to Napo Wildlife Center, guests fly by jet from Quito to the town
of Coca (officially known as
Francisco de Orellana ) on the Napo
River. After a short drive from the airport to the dock, we
board a large, motorized, covered canoe for a scenic two-hour trip down
the Napo River. Upon arriving at the entrance to the NWC Reserve, we
switch to smaller, dugout canoes and are paddled up the blackwater
creek to the lake and lodge (no motorized transport is allowed on the
creek or lake so that wildlife isn't disturbed). |
