QUITO
The
International Capitals Bureau has
declared Quito, Ecuador as
Americas’
Cultural Capital for 2011.
This declaration came on the
32nd anniversary of Quito
being named a World Heritage Site
by
UNESCO in 1978. The city has
already been benefitted from a
huge
regeneration investment, totaling
some $250 million in cultural
heritage works over the last
decade alone. Its historic centre
is
regarded as the largest,
best-preserved and best-restored
of any in the
Americas.
San Francisco de Quito is the
official denomination
of Quito (as it is more
commonly known as today), was
formerly founded on December 6th,
1534 after Sebastian de
Benalcazar, a
lieutenant of the Spanish
conquistador Francisco
Pizarro, conquered the Incas
led by general Rumiñahui.
The
Franciscan name of San
Francisco de Quito retained
the
word Quito - which is
thought to have been derived from
the
word Quitus (one of the
more prominent local tribes
present
in the
first millennium that
eventually formed its commercial
center in the area). Quito
is frequently referred to
as Luz
de América (Light of America)
and Patrimonio de la
Humanidad (World Heritage
Site).
Quito is an idea base from
which to
enjoy a wide variety of
interesting
site (Mindo Cloud Forest, Otavalo,
Cotopaxi Volcano etc), all less
than
two hour travel by road.
